Tim Street Class 3 Renault 5/ Pinto |
Tim asked if we could sort out the R5 and get it running properly. We do like a challenge....... The engine is removed Nice pair of RS alloys for the rear. Lots of time and money already spent on this engine. Polished crank and block and big valve head! 93,4mm pistons with polished rods and big port head with wasted stem inlet valves. Nice! Block cleaned, honed and painted. Crankshaft and pistons fitted. Cylinder head and camshaft installed. Cam belt and water pump drive belt fitted. The Ford alloys are cleaned and painted. Before.... And after, much nicer. We have now started to dismantle the car and rebuild it. The pile of unwanted bits gets larger.... Bit messy inside the cabin, needs sorting.... A few air intakes added to the front panel. The pile gets bigger!! The inside is now clear of all the clutter. It's got our name on it, so it will have to be good. Time to try and make sense of the undercarriage. Rear discs drilled to within an inch of their lives! More holes than disc. If in doubt....cut it out. Sorting out the rear axle link bars. Front suspension. No comment! (Needs sorting) A new radiator and twin fans refitted in a new location. These have to be shielded from the driver. A nice new steering wheel and the shaft machined to ensure it is straight! New seat mounts made and seat bolted in. Rear seat brace is now sorted. Vernier cam pulley fitted...Very nice! New gearbox mount in place, and seat belts fitted. Trial fit of the engine and box to decide where to place the engine mounts. First custom engine mount made and in place. Engine now bolted in. Rear hatch bolted on and fuel tank in place. Fuel pump and fuel lines part 1. Very nice battery box. 45 degree roll bars welded in. Main fuel line through the car to the carb. Inlet manifold sorted and fitted. Carb stripped, cleaned and fitted. New accellerator cable mounting bracket in place Expansion bottle mounted and air filter cleaned and fitted. Water pipes part 1.. Part 2. Engine bay. Expansion bottle sorted. Water pipes in place. Wiring done. First part of the heat shield is done. Heat shield now complete. Gauges in place. Battery box bolted in securely. Not much free space in the cockpit now. Spitfire style manifold bolted on, new one to follow. Steering rack being remounted. The exhaust begins its journey through the car. Heat shields will be next. Exhaust wrapped and part of the heat shield in place Coil and remote oil sensor and steering rack now in place. Oil catch tank. Front brake overhaul. The old....... And the new! New caliper bracket and caliper mounted. Master cylinder and servo removed to be replaced by a new master cylinder. New single cylinder fitted. Reggie now has brakes! Almost finished for 2011, plenty more development planned for next season. |
